Visual Communication – A necessity in business creativity!

Visual communication is an art in itself that communicates ideas and messages through the use of colors, symbols and images. Visual communication is much more than just making things “look pretty.”A lot of research, hard work and thought go into making a visually effective design that can communicate effectively. It begins with a thought, idea or a message that is transformed into a visually appealing image by a talented graphic designer. We all know and have witnessed the impact of “info-graphics.” Therefore good and powerful visual communication plays a strong role in attracting users and creating brand awareness. Moreover, with the rapid growth of social media, it becomes more important to convey information to users within seconds through the use of visual images.

The age old saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words”, holds true till date. The right visual representation can actually replace a thousand words and yet convey the same message; maybe even more effectively. According to various researchers, the majority of the human race is visual learners. We usually remember 10% of what we hear; 20% of what we read and 80% of what we see and do.

Businesses that communicate through the right usage of graphics and designs stay in the minds of users for a longer time than those who communicate only through text or spoken words alone. Visual communication is nothing new and existed amongst the early human races as well. The use of flow charts in different academic curriculum and teaching methods is also a proof in itself that visual communication helps recall information much better. It is a way of connecting emotionally as well.

In various instances, a visually appealing website or graphic conveys a message faster and better. As users, we usually scan through the headings or first two lines of a text to understand whether it is worth reading. But a picture done appropriately can instantly give the right message or arouse our interest.

A very practical example can be a business website. A website gets hardly a few seconds to grasp the interest of the user. A user will not get attracted to lengthy explanations and information on the very first page. Therefore, the possibility of attracting users increases when your website has different visual elements that clearly define your business motives. With regards to the business and its requirements, the design should match the subject or topic. Inclusion of appropriate colors, a meaningful slogan, graphic symbols are all necessary prerequisites that can be effectively handled by an experienced and qualified graphic designer.

But sometimes even visual elements such as logos, graphic designs, figures or any other type of drawing etc. may need interpretation. But interpretation of images is subjective and therefore visual elements can have multiple meanings. It is best to therefore include a short description or slogan or any other form of text to remove any misconception about the business and its products.

Visual communication has become a necessity in business creativity and the profession of a graphic/ visual communication designer is increasingly becoming important. Being creative and familiar with the principles of design and visual communication can help you create designs that are effective.

In addition to being creatively inclined with a strong aesthetic sense a degree or diploma in graphic design from a reputed institute is recommended for visual design jobs. Familiarity with computer graphics and latest design software is also an essential requirement to create a strong foothold in this industry. The job of a visual communication designer requires expertise in different software packages including Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, InDesign, and Flash etc. You should have an eye for detail and the ability to adapt to latest trends and new technology.

For those who are seriously interested in entering the colorful field of visual communications, it is advisable to do a little research about the field and about its different disciplines. It is not mandatory to have a design or art background to enter this field. Various creative individuals with a regular college degree have opted for a career in graphic design and completed an additional two - or three-year program. Keeping oneself updated on advancing technology and staying abreast of design trends is also important to further your prospects in this field.

Therefore it is important to select a graphic design school that offers excellent workshop facilities, great industry contacts and placement opportunities; and an exciting course curriculum that matches recent industry trends.
